I believe in the importance of promoting a physically active lifestyle amongst our student population. Children need 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity every day. For most KPS students this comes from 40 minutes of physical education classes taught by Mme. Gendron or me, running around and playing at recess time, and DPA activities with their homeroom teachers. Not to mention any activities that they participate in outside of school. If you are looking for activities to supplement your child’s PE programing, then this is the place to look.
The benefits of being physically active for children are enormous:
There are three main aspects of our PE program at KPS: fitness, fundamental movement skills (FMS), and Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU). Fitness is woven into the program for students in all grades. FMS are emphasized with our kindergarten to grade 3 students. While these important skills are still worked on in the junior grades, they are more often integrated into our PE activities instead of focused on specifically. TGfU is the main emphasis in grades 4-6, but is included in some of the games we use in the other grades.
I have created pages about these three main topics. On the fitness page, you will find a warm-up, cool-down and a weekly workout routine. On the page on the fundamental movement skills, you will find descriptions of these skills, what to look for as students become more proficient at each skill, and when possible helpful links. The TGfU page has descriptions of the games’ categories and examples of games that can be played at home. Obviously, these pages are works in progress and will grow over time. These pages can be accessed via the Menu at the top of this page.
